How to use the Earth Day Emergent Reader

Driving home today, the guy in front of me kept throwing his trash out of his window. It was driving me insane. My firsties worked on this adorable Missing Addend activity. It was a great reminder that my kiddos need more practice with problems where the sum is first rather than last. My most favorite activity was this adorable craftivity that I've hung up in time for Open House. I love tear art because it's so easy. When the townspeople find their garbage stuck to them, they learn a valuable lesson.

Rookie Read-About is another of my favorite nonfiction series for young children. I would recommend reading this book after some of the others. The Tree Lady , by H. Joseph Hopkins. This is a beautiful picture book biography of Kate Sessions, the woman who transformed dry San Diego into a beautiful, tree-covered city. I loved this inspiring story! When she saw the deforestation of her country, Wangari enlisted local women to help her plant more trees.

Not only did the bags make an ugly mess, but they also caused illness and death among people and livestock. Isatou and other women cleaned the plastic bags and recycled them into plastic purses. Such a great book!

This one was a favorite of my Three. The Curious Garden , by Peter Brown. Liam is a curious boy living in a drab, gray city. One day, he finds a few dying plants growing through an old railroad track. Liam waters and prunes the plants until they grow into a lush garden that overtakes the entire city.

By the end of the book, greenery covers the rooftops and pops up in the most unexpected places. We noticed something new every time we read the book. Also like many of her books, it may be too wordy for young listeners.

The class attends a field trip where they learn about the importance of recycling and protecting nature. A note at the back of each book is for parents and teachers, suggesting ways to use the book most effectively. Earth Day-Hooray! Facts about recycling throughout the story will help readers understand how important it is to take care of the Earth. Told from the point of view of a free-spirited plastic bottle, kids can share in the daily experiences and inner thoughts of the bottle through his personal journal. The diary entries will be fun and humorous yet point out the ecological significance behind each product and the resources used to make it.

I Can Save the Earth is a book that will educate children on what they can do to be more eco-friendly. The books in this line will be made from recycled materials, and the storylines will cover subjects such as improving the environment, learning about endangered animals, recycling, and much more. A hands on and practical way to celebrate Earth Day is by having students get involved. I like to give my students a grocery bag and plastic gloves. They walk around the playground and school grounds picking up any litter that can be found. They enjoy this project and the school grounds look much better when we are done…win-win!
